Why Organic Matters (a lot) to Us

Glance at our shop with one eye from across the street on a foggy day and you’ll still be able to tell we care about organic eating. It’s not a get-thin-quick scheme or a dare to see how long we can go without certain foods. Organic eating is about good living fuelled with good, non-poisonous, un-tampered food.

Okay. I’m getting carried away. Right now I’m just here to explain what organic eating really means to us.

For a farm to legally call itself organic, it must meet strict standards established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Those standards regulate all kinds of practices, from foregoing traditional pesticides to using only natural fertilizers.

One of the most important methods certified organic farmers use is crop rotation. Raising crops reduces soil quality, making it harder for that field to produce each time. But intentional crop rotation counteracts that depletion, using one crop to leave nutrients in the soil that help with the next crop.

In fact, as Dr. Firman Bear of Rutgers University reports, “A well-thought out crop rotation is worth 75% of everything else that might be done to raise a crop, including fertilization, tillage, and pest control.”

Awesome, right?

3. So what?

So organic farming is good for the earth. Is organic food good for us?

I try to keep it light around here, but listen up. Not only is organic food good for you, it’s also not toxic to you.

Let’s talk about GMOs. Yes that stands for genetically modified organisms, and yep they’re even worse than they sound. They’re made by chemical companies who want to make crops cheaper and more resistant to herbicides, fungicides, and pests. This of course leads to increased pesticide use, which means more ends up on the plate and in our arteries and veins. Yes, the crops are modified to destroy the nervous system of the pests that try to eat them, what do you think they do to you? Nasty stuff.

Aside from that, the impact of GMOs (which you can find in just about any non-organic product derived from corn, soy, canola, and sugar beets) on our health is not yet known clinically speaking. Studies will show in a few decades, but it’s safe to say eating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes will make us anything but immortal.

4. Is organic better?

So much better. It’s why I love juicing so much. I know all these pure, real, organic nutrients are getting absorbed right into my system toxin-free. The idea is to make it easier for the body to function, not harder. These are juices intended for healing and truly balancing out the body’s chemistry. They make me feel awesome, and they just so happen to be tasty, too.

When you consume foods pumped full of GMOs or simply non-organic, your body takes in things it was never meant to process (pesticides, fungicides, herbicides...) which your tissues inevitably absorb.

I love juicing because the truth is on our side. The truth is nature provides everything a body needs, and organic food provides just that.
